This sounds like a job for Reaktor. It's been around for so long that I 
sometimes forget it exists but it can do some amazing things.

I had a quick look in the Users Library and there's this one:

Clearly that's got a whole lot more going on but there's an interesting 
filter matrix included. One could easily extract that part and use it on 
it's own. Or tinker with it and create something more personal.

I've done several filter banks with Reaktor although nothing as complex 
as a string filter. CPU used to be an issue with big Reaktor ensembles 
but not so much these days.
