To be honest. There is a difference between the possibilities you do 
with all the multiple-filter stuff like vocoders, Stringfilters or the 
Elements and Rings from Mutable on one side, and a multi band resonator 
like the polymoog resonator on the other side.

The first ones are sound generators themselves, the latter ones work in 
the sense of subtractive synthesis. If we concentrate on the second 
category, then I found that I use rarely more than two bands. For most 
vowel you get away with two bands, only a few require three bands.

I love the Doepfer A-127, and I use a similar multi filter in my 
nordmodular quite often. So for the start: I suggest to go that way.
