I was going to ask whether FPE are limited to aluminum, but thanks to your hint I found the info on their web site. They can't handle steel panels, but just about anything else works. Since plastic wouldn't shield the audio circuits, I'm thinking that means aluminum only.

I'll just look for cheap, pre-fab 1U cases with aluminum face plates and go from there.
