That would indeed be the bomb, Tom. ;-)

Speaking of revolutionary devices, specifically endless potentiometers with
dual tracks - as someone just indicated, it's probably more common having
one of the wipers turned 180 degrees rather than one of the tracks. At
least in the ones I've seen, it makes much more sense construction-wise.

Regarding conventional encoders: All 4 intermediate steps can theoretically
be used to increase the resolution fourfold, but the encoder switches can
get quite glitchy with age, giving nasty signals, needing heavy filtering
making it harder to actually use these steps as a more detailed range with
a decent feel. (At least without extra clever hardware debouncing.) This
might not be obvious until after some years of use. So even if it works in
a prototype, don't bet your life on it in a product. :-)
