I haven't followed this thread, but as far as I know, since the first time
I installed KiCad, the zoom has worked exactly the way it did in Eagle and
the tiny bit of DipTrace that I tried. The "non broken" way.
So it seems to me that it's the default now. Perhaps it wasn't when
whoever it was started using it, and the old behavior was kept if you
upgraded, to avoid unfamiliarity? Which is actually a *good* practice.
As for open source, someone's bedroom project, major development of KiCad
is currently done by CERN. Hardly some guy in a bedroom.
I have a few complaints of my own about decisions the devs/community have
come to, but then I had complaints about other things in Eagle and never
even a chance to voice an opinion about those. I do really miss being able
to use both zoom and scroll from the mouse with different keystrokes as I
was navigating in Eagle, but for all I know I just don't know the
incantation to enable that in KiCad, and it hasn't been such a burden that
I have to seek it out.....
