I am the robot...  As a child I dreamed about tiny components without knowing about SMD, later I cut the leads and grinded ends of resistors to make them SMD. Or cut the leads of DIP IC and solder it as SMD.  Now, when I cannot see anymore the markings on 0603 resistors, or even 0805, I still prefer it over THT.  Guess it's more like personal preference.
