How about this: you sell the PDF only directly from your website. You generate a unique, password protected PDF for each order including some markers (like the NSA uses) that let you identify the unique owner of the document. You include in the license a hefty fine to be paid if they allow the doc to be pirated. A stolen laptop won't include the password so that would be reasonably hacker proof.
You sell the whole thing for $150. Since it will have a full text search index it's actually far more valuable than a stack of paper.
A full text index on cd or internet would also be a great enhancement to the stack of paper.
