Using a microcontroller would be a good way to do it these days; the discrete CMOS LFSR designs are often based on hard-to-find chips and don't have a very long sequence.  There used to be an 8-pin chip used in a lot of instruments that such a short sequence you could hear a distinct chuffchuffchuff in the noise source.
