As Justin says, they are indeed a form of FFC (or Flat Flexible Cable).
They come in a variety of pitches, lengths and end types.
most places now sell them (including digikey, mouser, etc).

You can get FFC ZIF type sockets, again in a variety of types, if you 
think you may need to ever separate them, if not then just putting some 
'fingers' at the edge of the boards you can solder these direct to it.

A lot depends if this is for a one off or for production.
