I wonder how practical it might be to just buy surface-mount caps and
attach leads to them.  That's how through-hole MLCCs are made anyway.
It's just a couple of solder joints and a dip in conformal coating, should
be easy to reproduce at home.  It might not be appropriate for production
but might be okay for prototyping.
