[sdiy] IDC, Pin Headers, Ribbon Wire: Where to start?

I was dumb enough to put an expansion connector right next to a power 
connector of the same size. So far only 2 people plugged power into the 
expansion connection. The resulting, um, 'toast' was impressive.
