[sdiy] IDC, Pin Headers, Ribbon Wire: Where to start?

Greetings,

I found this list while searching for answers to this question, so I hope
that I've come to the right place.

I prototype circuits on standard blank PCB - but have never learned very
much about organized fabrication. I would like to come up with a simple
solution to use 10-pin ribbon wire to connect boards together. I am very
uncertain about the standard sizes, terminology, and best practices,
though. Would people here be willing to share some of their methods?
