I agree. It's not so much the shape of the cross section of the
pins, but the area of the cross section. Once you've plugged
square pin headers into a breadboard, you'll probably find that
part of the breadboard will not work reliably with flat pins
like the typical stamped lead frame of ICs. Round pins would
be less of a problem but "not recommended".

Should not be a problem, although the brittle pins of machined
headers are more likely to break if you clinch the pins prior
to soldering. I usually find some way to hold them flat against
the PCB until I can solder opposing corners.
