[sdiy] HF-VCO / counter / memory / DAC ?

My first dive into digital was the log back module which was just that. 128 samples per wave so the hf vco ran at 128x base frequency
What I found was at that speed the VCO didn't track well at all, I got about 4 octaves of useful range.
I then switched to NCOs and the monowave was born.
The NCOs in that let me run 256 samples waveforms without any tracking issues :)

Hi, based on the NCO thread, I have to ask: did a HF-VCO + counter + memory + DAC combination go out of fashion?
I understand it’s not really feasible for a commercial product, but for DIY?
