My main modular is 4 rows (3U) of 230TE/HP, it takes a bit of thinking to come
up with a logical structure for the modules, but I never need to patch something
from far left to far right.
You do use somewhat longer patch cables, 60/80/120 (cm) rather than 40 and 60 cm
lengths. that rack has wooden rails.
I have a bunch of short rails from work (35TE or thereabouts) and a friend of
mine had a good use for them, just use a piece of M5 threaded rod to couple them
together (or to a 84TE rail). It sounded plausible, haven't tried it out.
The location of the screw hole (which is usually used to couple the rails to the
cheeks) is not standard though, so finding a random different rail which works
well (there's not that much allowance for tolerances) is going to be hit or
miss.
