I purchased a full, unlimited license for Eagle 5 back in 2008, and stayed on the same version for eight years until I couldn't use my PowerPC computers any more.

I finally upgraded to Eagle 7.6 almost a year ago when they held a 40% discount sale. I will probably continue to use this unlimited license as long as I can rather than learn new software, especially since I understand the User Language Programs, Libraries, and scripting of Eagle.

I realize that it can be a pain to stay on an old release. I already had trouble upgrading to Eagle 7.7 because it seems like it won't accept my license. Now they're on Eagle 8 and I have no idea whether I would have to pay extra to run that version.

Sometimes my clients need me to use their schematic capture (or layout) software, and so far that hasn't been too bad. Unfortunately, although there were some features missing from Eagle, I also discovered that Eagle has a few features I use quite frequently that don't seem to be available in other software - at least not the ones I've tried. That's enough for me to stick to Eagle. If a client ever inspires me to use different software that is a total superset of Eagle, then I'll start looking at the cost to move over. Last time was Cadence Allegro, which is quite nice, but still a tradeoff of plusses and minuses.

I used Protel in the past but ended up with Eagle as the full version of Altium priced itself out of contention. I would be interested to hear what other Eagle users are doing.
