There are many parts of circuits that are only appropriate for the situation at hand, and your application might be rather different. You really need to read and understand how a circuit works before you know whether it's appropriate for your new design.
This is why I'm constantly going back to Ray Wilson's designs, for example. And then there's this great mailing list. I can describe something I'm working on and within an hour or two have a dozen ideas on how to do it better/easier/cheaper.
