When someone is getting started in this hobby, I won't say that discrete
is the way to go. Rather, use op-amps where you can, but as you get more
proficient you will figure out when discrete amplfiers will do useful
things for you.
There is specific circuits which will be useful, but for most part,
discrete amps is just not worth it in foot-print and additional cost.
