They are pots. Very nicely made inside - the lever has a wiper on the end
with a flying wire to the contact, which runs along an arc shaped carbon
track.
The indents are a spring against dimples on the inside of the case.

Yamaha do have an annoying habit of using the same names for entirely
different things.
For example, the GX1 is both a massive synth, and a guitar.
The YC45D a classic combo organ, and the YV1 a classic motorbike.
