It's a bit like a cathedral.

A small army of engineers, machinists, electronics assemblers, delivery
men, and service techs all had to be assembled and kept to make that a
viable product.

It is doubly impressive when you realize that the metal work and circuits
were designed on paper, without the help of software.

Also, there was no google to answer your questions or model your circuits
for you, or give you an easy way to see what was currently available on the
component market.
