Yes to AdaFruit, used them for rare parts, before they got greedy like
everybody else.
Steampunk, my esoteric friend is into..isn't that about clothes fashion?
I see your point, but isn't that list mostly non-synth and electronics
related? (uC robotics)
I will add Don Lancaster's column in RE and others to that list.

I hardly qualify to comment on any new developments of the past 10 to 15
years all I am saying is there is still value and satisfaction in the old
way of doing things, i.e magazine articles, building from scratch or
breadboarding, kludges, etc. And I prefer to deal with small enterprises
and pay cash. And maybe get out of the house for a few minutes and commune
with my fellow man. Heaven forbid!
