Yes, it is a bit shocking that even large American cities have no component
shops to speak of. Of course, we are spoiled here in Vancouver, with Lee's
Electronic Components on Fraser Street, by far the best component shop I
have ever seen anywhere in the world, and they do a crazy good business.
They used to be on Main Street, but they closed the Main location a few
weeks ago (much sadness, since Main St. is way cooler than Fraser St. with
more to do and more places to eat). Still on Main is Main Electronics,
which is probably the second best components shop I've ever seen. I go
there when Lee's doesn't have what I want -- they were three doors down from
Lee's. There used to be two or three others in town, but they couldn't
compete with Lee's and they've all closed down now I think.

Fry's used to have an electronics parts section, but it's not really stocked

It's still better than Radio Shack in many ways, but anything that's
actually silicon is NTE. I've bought a few NTE devices that, when you look
at them in a cross light, are obviously some other part with the NTE part
number silkscreened over it. I could take a picture of a couple of
optoisolators (4N28 or similar) if anyone doesn't believe me.
It's a shame there aren't more brick & mortar electronics shops even in
large metros (only found one in all of Chicagoland, with a few cycles of
looking, and they too carry almost exclusively NTE parts).
