Surely the latter point is just a function of etching at home?  That's why I do it.  I can knock a board out in Kicad and have it etched and ready to solder, really quickly.  I can get through two or three iterations of boards in a day (including the time spent building the first one, hacking it up a bit, deciding what I want to change etc).

It's even easier if you use surface-mount.
