[sdiy] 1N4148 as replacements for Germaniumdiodes

Please allow this 606-related question while it's somewhat on-topic:
Recently I have noticed that when turning on my 606 and immediately raising the volume to a suitable level, the device does not power on. I have to lower the volume back to the lowest point (just above the switch) in order for it to start working (LEDs illuminate/flash).
Is this likely just a bad switched pot, or is there something else at play here? I can't tell by the service manual how the switched pot controls the power.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Originally Roland uses germanium diodes 1S188FM. 1N270 or NTE110A are recommended as replacement. If I look at the corresponding datasheets, I don't see anything that would speak agains 1N4148.
