Many synths update their oscillators at a "control rate" of around 1kHz. 
e.g. Roland Juno 106.  You can see sidebands from 1kHz pitch update rate if 
you deeply modulate the oscillator's pitch with a fast enough LFO and look 
at the spectrum.  I think you'd be hard pushed to hear the sidebands for 
low-pitched notes using typically rich oscillator waveforms where the dense 
harmonics of the waveform would perceptually mask any low-level inharmonic 
sidebands.
