I really like the quality of etching with ammonium persulfate, but my main gripe is that it is quite temperature dependent, as is ferric chloride (to a lesser degree).I have etched boards and enclosures on the garden table, with the container (photo dev container) sitting in the snow, using muriatic and hydrogen peroxide. The etching is coarse, but for quick prototypes, adequate. It's been a long while though, lasercut frontpanels and iTead pcbs these days. Don't miss the drilling either.
Regards,Jarno.

Ammonium persulfate is a strong oxidant. It dissolves copper by oxidizingit to the cupric state thus:(NH4)2S2O8 + Cu --> CuSO4 + (NH4)2SO4A byproduct of the reaction is ammonium sulfate, which is a fertilizer. This is very simple and effective chemistry, and I suspect that it is themost efficient and easy-to-use etchant system. However, it's also a littlebit costly. > -----Original Message-----> From: Synth-diy [mailto:synth-diy-bounces at dropmix.xs4all.nl] > On Behalf Of Olav Martin Kvern> Sent: Friday, March 04, 2016 11:01 AM> To: synth-diy at dropmix.xs4all.nl> Subject: Re: [sdiy] Audio circuits and basic electronics > knowledge recommendation.> > Hi David [Dixon],> > re: alternatives to Ferric Chloride> > I've been using Ammonium Persulphate for years, based on a > photo-process writeup that Ray Wilson used to have on his > site.
