Ammonium persulfate is a strong oxidant. It dissolves copper by oxidizing
it to the cupric state thus:
(NH4)2S2O8 + Cu --> CuSO4 + (NH4)2SO4
A byproduct of the reaction is ammonium sulfate, which is a fertilizer.
This is very simple and effective chemistry, and I suspect that it is the
most efficient and easy-to-use etchant system. However, it's also a little
bit costly.
