Was he just oldschool, or did he have a point?

Sort of.  A simulation is only as good as the model.  If your simulation 
model is too simple then it won't model the true behaviour of a circuit 
faithfully, but if the model is sufficiently complicated then it will model 
the behaviour sufficiently accurately.  Spice simulation is very much used 
in the professional electronics design industry and is a powerful tool. 
However, like any tool, it needs to be used properly for you to get good 
results and trust it.
