I would like to replace it with a new NiCad rechargeable rather than attempt the job I see most have done disabling the charging circuit. Any reason not to do this? Any idea what exactly would be a good replacement rechargeable NiCad battery?
You can't get new NiCd batteries any more, because cadmium is pretty relentlessly horrible stuff.
The good news is that NiMH is a drop-in replacement (to a first-order approximation) and you can get them in exactly the same form factors as old NiCd memory backup batteries.
