If it has not leaked yet, it only means that CR-78 has well designed
charging circuit, in contrary to most of other synths that simply
overcharged the cells making them leak.
You can still buy NiCads, but it may be difficult to find one that
matches your PCB, so this would have to be placed somewhere in the case
with leading wires. As a bonus, in case of possible leaking it will not
damage PCB but spit the shit in safe corner.
This may be just my impression, but I think everything made now is
designed to last maximum 5 years to save every dime here and there. So
it may be that new NiCad will not last as long as the original one. OTOH
one Lithium cell wil be fine for 20 years, and replacing it takes 3
seconds. I'd go for Li cell and disabling charging circuit.

I have no experience with CR-78, so will not comment 2nd question.

I would like to replace it with a new NiCad rechargeable rather than attempt the job I see most have done disabling the charging circuit. Any reason not to do this? Any idea what exactly would be a good replacement rechargeable NiCad battery?
