The 6809 was used in the 8-bit Ensoniq gear too.  It's almost ridiculously suitable for running Forth.  On my Github pages I've got a version of Dave Dunfield's Forth ported to the Mirage...

Given the ease with which huge piles of discrete logic can be crammed into a CPLD or FPGA, how realistic would it be to build a "new" Audity?

Assume reasonable skill at laying out PCBs, VHDL etc ;-)

You really, really ought to speak to someone on the Classic Computers mailing list.  Someone will be able to help you bring it all to life, and it would be worth doing so - you've got some *proper* history there.
