All subjective.  Control laws are driven by your ears.

VCA inputs can be linear or exponential too.  Mixing shapes between
EGs and VCAs is an empirical process.  Some work best for audio,
others best for modulation.

A good example is a trick I use for brass patches.  I like to inject a
little EG into the pitch on one of the two VCOs for a nice fat
transient on the attack.  It works on my Oberheims and Andromeda, but
it doesn't sound right on my Memorymoog.  The difference is the
control law  of the modulation VCA.
