Many synths have a "footage" control as a rotary switch controlling the octave of the VCO. A simple 4-position control turns a 5-octave manual into a 10-octave VCO, assuming that the Fine VCO frequency control spans at least an octave. In other words, the VCO is not always locked to a single pitch for each key, so the 5-octave limitation is not a VCO limitation.
