For those who may not be aware - every post on this list is publicly
archived, including plaintext names and email addresses, at
http://dropmix.xs4all.nl/pipermail/synth-diy/
A shady bot will ignore robots.txt and snatch all that info up pretty
easily. It's probably already happened multiple times.
Anyone that's subscribed to the list is also a potential source for every
address to get snatched by a hacker/malware/whatever, be it from a
yahoo/gmail address book or off outlook on their office computer.
As for how "gordonjcp" would show up in a dictionary attack, a generator
would probably come up with that in a few seconds, after a few thousand
guesses. It emails gordon@, then gordon1@, etc until it arrives at
gordonjcp. Spray and pray style, just look at the CC's on spam you get.
Personally I'd like to stick to something simple like the existing mailman
list. Where it's hosted isn't a major issue.
Best,
Nathan
