The dual core thing goes right back to the ARP 2500. Take a look at the 1004 VCOs. Triangle (square/pulse/sine) VCO and a saw VCO - each had it's own expo sub-module, and it looks like the triangle reset the saw. 

Dennis worked for ARP - so I guess that's where it came from.
