fwiw -- in my experience it's not necessary to have a Google / Yahoo
account just to use their group services, you can subscribe, post, etc, via
email.
however, due to flaws in the way Yahoo Mail does signatures, users there
may encounter incompatibilities dealing with Google services, among others.
