[sdiy] VCO - sine output - why bother?

I have designed VCOs which are very popular in eurorack format, including
the Intellijel Dixie. This is a tricore VCO with an LFO range switch, and
many modular users use the Dixie primarily as an LFO to modulate other
devices. In this mode, I would guess that the sine wave output is used
about 90% of the time. The Dixie has a very good sine shaper circuit based
on a couple of transistors and an opamp which gives just about the cleanest
sine you can get without a self-oscillating filter, and this has been a huge
selling point for the Dixie. It is very important to have a clean sine wave
source for both amplitude (including ring) and frequency modulation. Clean
sine waves are also the best sound source for wavefolding.

The clean sine wave, and the Dixie's superior tracking, are probably the
main reasons why the Dixie has become the standard go-to VCO in eurorack.
