I've been using 3.5mm stereo sockets for MIDI on my MIDIBass 303 retrofits
since 2004.
Tip to pin 4, ring to pin 5, shield to pin 2.
I put pin 4 (the +5V line) on the tip so it wouldn't be shorted to ground if
the cable was accidentally fitted to a mono socket that shorts the ring and
shield.
I use metal chassis sockets since the 303 case is plastic.
On a device with a metal chassis, it's a simple matter to use a 3.5mm socket
with a plastic bush for isolation.
