The point of the apparently weird pinout is numbering compatibility with
other DIN connectors with a different number of pins. You start with DIN3
which only has pins 1, 2, 3 spaced far apart. DIN5 adds two pins, but the
position of 1, 2, 3 are preserved and pins 4 and 5 are placed between the
existing pins. Same concept for connectors with even more pins, as seen on
Commodore computers and many other things designed in the '80s.
