[sdiy] VCA - linear vs. expo control, digital modulation source

Hey there SDIYers!

If I want to control a VCA of a synth voice, like typically after the 
VCF, and the source of the control signal is an MCU with a 12-bit DAC.
Is the 12-bit resolution enough to control a VCA with linear control 
circuit even if I'd like to use (perhaps switchable) exponential curves 
generated in software, or might this be too chunky in some regions and 
I'd be significantly better off using a VCA with exponential response?
