Whilst I agree entirely with Brian - the best type depends on the specific application, I'd like to propose a easier solution:
Replace with the same type as what was there before.
Modern caps of the same type almost certainly have a better spec than the ones they used originally, simply because manufacturing methods and techniques have improved significantly in the intervening decades, and this is especially true if you use some good quality parts and don't trim a few pence off the BOM, which mass-market manufacturers have been known to do. Plus you're replacing old with new, so it should be closer to its spec, since the old ones have likely drifted. Beyond that, anything else is gravy.
