I have these too, used one on my own Joystick module design, works great! For a baton I stuck a small radio antenna on there, which is great. As it extends and gives me this far away fine control, like on this video https://youtu.be/uy5fLNnb4w4
If you don't like the antenna idea, I've also successfully used knobs made for drawers or cabinets, with a bit of shrink tubing to make it snug
