Some lead-free solder always has a dull surface.  Shiny is no longer an 
indicator for a good quality solder joint.

The point was not to mix lead and lead-free on the same tools.  Since I 
still need the leaded stuff for repair work, that essentially means sticking 
with lead for DIY or doubling up the soldering tools.

I don't know.  That would preclude almost any repair work on older 
equipment.
