Yes! The MMA makes a big deal about how MIDI is not limited to the original physical interface.

For a long time, we've have MIDI over ethernet, MIDI over FireWire, MIDI over WiFi, MIDI over USB, etc.

You might look around MIDI.org for a list of all the physical interfaces.
