Actually
Alesis / Wavefront AL140x ADAT chips supported sending MIDI over
lightpipe. Too bad the chips are EOL now (maybe still available through
some channels alike Alibaba).
Regarding the powering issue a simple solution is to build an adapter with
a power supply for non-5V MIDI devices which allows drawing as much current
@5V as you like. Btw. using the MIDI out as a PSU has also other issues
like possible ground loops.
