Yes, you can leave it forever. Like they say in board cleaning industry, either clean the flux entirely down to atomic level, or better leave it untouched. Solid flux may protect the board, but when it's fracked, it becomes home for water and causes a lot of bad shit (in contrary to good shit), like disolving solder, dendrites and so on.
It's not easy to clean it at home, so just leave it on. And you cannot leave water-soluble flux for too long because they cause corrosion.
