Hi,

I think I may have answered my own question. I found this product:
http://www.mikroe.com/add-on-boards/audio-voice/audio-codec-proto/
Which uses SPI as an I2S bus. It is intended to attach to a proc that 
has a SPI bus that cab do 32-bit transfers. The codec runs in master mode.

I will be delving into this further.
