I strongly concur with Neil.  For learning the basics of electronic circuits
with transistors, you really can't beat Malvino.  If you can find it, the
3rd edition is spectacular.  Probably one of the 2 or 3 best textbooks I've
ever seen on any subject (and, being a prof, I've seen lots of textbooks).
Very clear prose, written for people who don't already know (unlike Horowitz
and Hill, which can be quite daunting for beginners).
