Hi Tom,
It's a "machined pin socket" that you're looking for, I think. I'm not sure
whether they make 40-pin ones or not, but I believe they do. I use 8-, 14-,
and 16-pin ones all the time, and have used 18-, 20-, and 28-pin ones as
well. They're great for unplugging and replugging ICs.
