The usual square pin ones are great, and fine on a breadboard, but the pins are slightly too large to fit into an IC socket, so they're not so good for this application. I'd like something that would allow me to pull a 40-pin DIP uP out of its socket and stick a replacement daughter board in instead.

You may want to look at something like Aries 20-0600-20.

These pin-headers fit your description and the individual pins are a bit
thinner as usual. With 40 pins the standard pin headers need a lot of
force to get lifted from a socket. You risk breaking traces if you try
to do so.

With the smaller pins the daughter boards will still have good contact
but you can remove it without to much force if nessesary.

Best,
 Nils
